How RV Air Conditioners Work and Why They Fail

Most RV rooftop AC units — Dometic, Coleman-Mach, Advent Air, and Penguin models — are self-contained units with a compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, and one or two fan motors sealed inside a single housing. Because they're sealed assemblies, RV AC service is very different from residential HVAC work.

The capacitor is the single most common failure point. It's an energy-storage device that provides the startup surge the compressor needs. Florida heat degrades capacitors at about 3× the rate of moderate climates, according to capacitor manufacturer lifecycle data. A failing capacitor causes the compressor to hum but not start, or to start slowly and trip the thermal overload. Replacement cost is $85-175 and it's a same-day fix in nearly every case.

The fan motor (or both fan motors — evaporator and condenser) is the second most common failure. Fan bearings seize when lubrication breaks down from heat cycling. When a fan motor fails, the coils can freeze up, the compressor overheats, or you get zero airflow despite the compressor running. Replacement is $250-450 depending on the model.

Refrigerant charge: RV AC units use R-410A refrigerant. Low refrigerant means the system is leaking, which is a sealed-system failure. EPA Section 608 certification is required to handle refrigerants — all of our technicians hold current certification. Signs Your RV AC Needs Service

• Unit runs but blows warm air — most often a failed capacitor, frozen evaporator coil, or low refrigerant charge.
• Loud grinding or rattling — fan motor bearing failure. Run it too long and the motor seizes, causing compressor overload and a much larger repair bill.
• Tripping the breaker repeatedly — compressor is drawing too much current, usually from a failing capacitor or start relay.
• Ice forming on the air handler or coils — restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked vents) or low refrigerant. Thaw it, clean the filter, and recheck. If it freezes again, it's refrigerant.
• Thermostat shows set temp but unit won't run — thermostat failure, control board issue, or wiring connection problem at the rooftop unit.
• Furnace fires but shuts off after 10-30 seconds — most common: failed sail switch (measures airflow) or failed flame sensor. Both are inexpensive parts; the diagnosis is what takes the time.

How We Diagnose and Repair RV Climate Control Systems

We start every AC call with a voltage and amperage check at the unit and at the power pedestal or inverter. A surprising number of "bad AC" calls are actually wiring issues — a loose connection in the power cord or a failing distribution center that's dropping voltage under load.

If power is clean, we pull the shroud and test the capacitor (with a capacitance meter, not just a visual inspection), run the fan motors independently, and check the refrigerant pressure with a manifold gauge set. This full diagnosis takes about 45 minutes and tells us exactly what's needed.

For furnace diagnosis, we check the LP pressure at the regulator, test igniter output (should produce a strong spark), verify the sail switch is closing properly with the blower running, and test the flame sensor for proper resistance. Atwood (now Dometic) and Suburban furnaces each have slightly different diagnostic sequences, and our technicians have direct experience with both.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection reports that the state averages 35+ days per year above 95°F. At those temperatures, a rooftop AC unit running at full duty cycle is operating near the top of its design envelope. Two things happen over time:

• Coil fouling accelerates: Florida pollen (particularly March-May) combined with humidity creates a sticky film on condenser coils. A coil that's 10% blocked loses 7-10% of its cooling capacity. Annual coil cleaning is worth doing.
• Salt air attacks the coil fins: Coastal RVs within 15-20 miles of the ocean see the aluminum fins on the condenser coil corrode and collapse over time. Collapsed fins reduce airflow and efficiency. When more than 20% of the fin area is damaged, replacement is more cost-effective than repair.
