Dometic and Norcold absorption refrigerators use a 3-way heat source — LP gas, 120V AC heating element, or 12V DC — to drive a chemical refrigeration cycle through an ammonia solution. There are no moving parts and no compressor. This is why they're so quiet and why they work without shore power.

The trade-off: absorption refrigerators cool about 30 degrees below ambient temperature, not to a fixed temperature. On a 95°F Florida day, your fridge may only reach 65°F — which is not food-safe. They also require level operation within 3 degrees — a permanently un-level RV will cause the ammonia solution to pool incorrectly and stop cooling.

The most common failure is a failed cooling unit — the sealed boiler and tubing assembly. Signs include a yellow or rust-colored residue on the cooling unit fins or behind the fridge, a strong ammonia smell, or a fridge that runs but never gets cold. A failed cooling unit cannot be repaired in the field — it's a sealed system that requires replacement of the entire unit.

Residential refrigerators (12V compressor units like Furrion or Norcold 12V) are increasingly popular as replacements. They cool to a fixed temperature regardless of ambient, but they require significantly more 12V power — a typical residential RV fridge draws 80-150Ah per day. If your battery bank or solar system isn't sized for it, the fridge will drain your batteries overnight.

Signs Your RV Refrigerator Needs Service

• Not getting cold despite running — thermometer in the fridge reads above 40°F after 4+ hours. On LP gas, check the flame. On 120V, check that the heating element is drawing current. If both modes fail to cool, the cooling unit has likely failed.
• Yellow stain or powder on the back of the unit — sodium chromate from the ammonia solution, indicating a cooling unit leak. This confirms the cooling unit needs replacement.
• Ammonia smell near the fridge — same as above. Don't use the fridge until inspected.
• LP flame won't stay lit — thermocouple failure (won't prove flame), clogged burner orifice (often from dirt dauber nests in Florida), or LP supply issue.
• Fridge works on shore power but not LP, or vice versa — isolates the problem to the specific heating element or LP system.
