Interior renovation is one of those RV projects that looks simple in a YouTube video and turns out to be more involved in practice — mostly because RV construction uses non-standard dimensions, non-residential grade fasteners, and wall/floor surfaces that react differently to standard flooring adhesives. What Makes RV Interior Work Different from Home Renovation

RV floor substrates are typically luan plywood or OSB at 1/4" to 3/8" — much thinner than residential subfloors. Vinyl plank flooring designed for residential use may be too thick for slide-outs, which have a specific floor-to-slide-floor gap that can't accommodate an extra 3/8" of elevation without the slide binding. We measure slide floor gaps before specifying flooring thickness.

RV walls are typically thin fiberglass or vinyl over luan — they can't support the same cabinet and shelf loads as drywall over stud walls. Mounting anything to an RV wall requires finding the framing members behind the luan, or using specialized RV wall anchors designed for thin substrates. Anchors that work in residential drywall pull straight through RV luan.

RV furniture is built to save weight — there's no heavy particle board. Replacement furniture or modifications must account for this. A heavier countertop material (granite, thick solid surface) may be more than the base cabinets were engineered to support without additional blocking underneath.

Common Interior Issues We See in Florida RVs

• Flooring buckling or peeling at seams — often from moisture intrusion at the edge of the floor, or flooring adhesive failing from temperature cycling. Florida's heat can cause adhesive failure on improperly installed vinyl plank.
• Cabinet door hinges pulling out — RV cabinet hinges are often mounted into thin luan. Repeated opening stress eventually pulls the screws out. We re-mount with longer screws into framing, or use epoxy anchors for problem doors.
• Upholstery mold or mildew — Florida humidity in a stored RV creates mold on fabric seating in a single summer. If the fabric smells musty or shows any discoloration, it needs to be replaced or professionally cleaned before mold spores spread through the RV.
• Dinette conversions — many owners want to remove the factory booth dinette (which most people find uncomfortable and waste-of-space) and replace with a table and chairs. This is one of our more common interior requests and it's very doable on most RV floor plans.

How We Approach RV Interior Work

For flooring, we measure the entire living area including under slide-outs and into bathroom areas, specify flooring that fits the height constraints, and install with appropriate transitions at the slide-out threshold. We use Ditra membrane in wet areas (bathroom) to prevent moisture from reaching the subfloor through tile grout.

For cabinet work, we build replacement doors using the same hinge placement as the originals (so existing mounting holes are used), finish in a color or material that matches the owner's preference, and test every door for proper closure and latch engagement before we leave.

For upholstery, we source fabric from suppliers that carry RV-grade vinyl and fabric with Florida UV ratings — standard furniture fabric fades significantly faster in the sun exposure an RV interior sees.

Interior Renovation Tips for Florida RV Owners

• Moisture-resistant materials only: In Florida's humidity, use luxury vinyl plank (LVP) rather than laminate for flooring — laminate swells at seams when exposed to moisture. Choose LVP with a commercial-grade wear layer rated for at least 12 mils.
• Mold-resistant adhesives: For any adhesive-set flooring or tile, use a mold-resistant adhesive rated for high-humidity applications. Standard residential tile adhesive can allow mold growth in Florida conditions.
• Storage-friendly modifications: If your RV spends summer in Florida storage (closed up, no climate control), mold-resistant fabric and treated upholstery foam significantly outperform untreated materials during the hot, humid storage season.
