The CH751 Security Problem

For decades, many RV manufacturers used interchangeable keyways in their entry door locks. The most common is the CH751 (also called CH751 or CAM lock), used by Bauer Products — a major RV lock supplier. These locks are designed for convenience in an RV context (simple, universal, widely available replacement parts) but they provide minimal actual security.

A replacement lock with a unique key (Bauer BOLT or any aftermarket deadbolt) resolves this. The BOLT series uses the transponder chip from your vehicle's ignition key to create a lock that only opens with your key — it's an elegant upgrade that costs about $90 installed.

Baggage compartment locks are often even simpler — many use a basic cam lock that a flathead screwdriver or the same CH751 key can open. Compartment lock replacement with a keyed-different lock is basic security hygiene for anyone storing valuables in their compartments.

Hitch and coupler locks are the anti-theft layer for trailer theft. A travel trailer without a hitch coupler lock is tow-away theft — takes 30 seconds to hook up and drive off. A quality coupler lock (Master Lock or Equal-i-zer with coupler lock feature) and a king pin lock for fifth wheels are the minimum anti-theft measures.

When to Address Your RV's Security

• You don't know if your lock is a factory CH751 — this is the most important one. If you're unsure, we can tell you in under 60 seconds and replace it if needed.
• Lock is stiff or difficult to operate — lubricate with graphite (not WD-40, which gums up locks over time). If it's still stiff after lubrication, the lock body may be failing.
• Key doesn't turn or turns but doesn't release — dead lock actuator, worn tumblers, or a bent key that has slightly warped the lock. Replacement is straightforward.
• You're leaving the RV unattended for extended periods — add a coupler or king pin lock and consider a GPS tracker. An inexpensive GPS device like a LandAirSea 54 hidden in the RV provides recovery capability if the worst happens.
