Types of RV Leveling Systems

RV leveling falls into two categories: stabilization (keeps the RV from rocking while parked) and leveling (actually changes the pitch and roll to get the RV level on uneven ground).

Electric automatic leveling (Lippert Ground Control, Bigfoot, Power Gear): These systems use sensors to detect the RV's current angle and automatically extend electric or hydraulic legs to level the unit. The leveling computer, level sensors, and individual leg motors or hydraulic solenoids all have failure modes. The most common: a leg motor that draws too much current (binding or seized), a level sensor that has drifted out of calibration, or a wiring harness connection at the motor that has corroded.

Hydraulic leveling systems (HWH, Kwikee): Common on Class A motorhomes and larger fifth wheels. A hydraulic pump pressurizes the system and individual solenoid valves direct fluid to each ram. Failure modes: low fluid (slow or incomplete leveling), a solenoid that doesn't energize (one leg won't move), or a ram seal leak that bleeds pressure overnight.

Manual electric landing gear (fifth wheels): Electric motors turn the landing gear legs up and down. Gearbox failures and motor failures are the most common issues, often from running the leg into the ground at full extension and overloading the motor.

Signs Your Leveling System Needs Service

• One leg won't extend or retract on command — could be the motor/solenoid for that specific leg, a wiring issue, or a binding leg housing.
• Auto-level cycle runs but doesn't get level — sensor calibration drift, a leg that's not extending fully, or a software issue. Try a manual override to see if individual legs respond.
• Hydraulic system makes noise but legs don't move — pump is running but pressure isn't building, usually from low fluid or a failed pump.
• Legs retract on their own overnight — hydraulic pressure leak past a solenoid valve or ram seal. This is a safety issue — the RV can become dangerously unlevel while you're asleep.
• Landing gear motor runs in one direction only — limit switch failure or a relay board issue.

How We Diagnose and Repair Leveling Systems

For electric systems, we test voltage and ground at each leg motor connector before opening anything up. A motor that gets power but doesn't turn has a failed motor or a binding mechanism. A motor that gets no power has a wiring or relay issue upstream. The distinction tells us which direction to dig.

For Lippert Ground Control systems, we use the Lippert diagnostic app to read fault codes and leg position data — this is far faster than manual troubleshooting and tells us exactly which component has flagged an error.

For hydraulic systems, we check fluid level first (simple and common), test pump pressure with a gauge (should reach 1,500-3,000 PSI depending on the system), and then test each solenoid valve for proper energization and flow.

Florida's soil creates specific leveling challenges:

• Sandy soil: Leveling legs sink into soft sandy soil, especially after rain. Leveling pads (we recommend BAL Diamond Levelers or Stackers) distribute the load and prevent sinking. Even with auto-leveling systems, check the pads after 24 hours in sandy sites and re-level if the RV has settled.
• Clay and limestone mix (Central Florida): This soil type is deceptively solid when dry but becomes very soft when wet. Wet season (June-September) means leveling maintenance may be needed every day or two on extended stays.
• Corrosion on leg threads and housings: Florida's humidity causes light surface rust on carbon steel leg components. Keep the leg shafts clean and lubricated with a light machine oil or dry PTFE spray. We see seized leg assemblies regularly on RVs that have sat in humid conditions without maintenance.
