How RV Awnings Are Built

Most RV awnings — Carefree of Colorado, A&E/Dometic, and Solera (Lippert) are the main manufacturers — use a spring-loaded or electric tube to roll the fabric out. The two awning arms provide lateral support and set the pitch angle for rain runoff.

Manual awnings use spring tension in the roller tube to retract. If the fabric won't stay out or feels very stiff to deploy, the spring tension needs adjustment — this is a tool-required procedure and not something to do without knowing what you're doing, as the spring stores significant energy.

Electric awnings use a tube motor (usually 12V DC) to extend and retract. The motor controller has limit switches that stop travel at the proper endpoints. If the awning doesn't retract fully or stops mid-travel, the limit switch adjustment or the motor itself is usually the issue.

Fabric types: Vinyl fabric (most common) is UV-resistant but becomes brittle in Florida's intense sun after 5-7 years. • Arm bent or twisted — from wind or hitting an obstacle. A bent arm puts stress on the awning tube and the fabric. Replace the arm before the next deployment.
• Fabric stained, torn, or cracking at the edges — UV degradation. Small tears can be patched temporarily, but cracking vinyl is near end-of-life. One storm hit on cracked fabric typically tears it completely.
• Awning deploys but one side sags — loss of spring tension in the arm spring, or a broken rafter. The fix depends on which one.
• Dripping at the seam — sewn seam on vinyl fabric eventually separates with UV exposure. Seam sealer can extend the life. Full replacement is the permanent fix.

• UV coating: 303 Aerospace Protectant applied twice a year slows UV degradation on vinyl fabric and keeps it flexible longer in Florida's sun. Costs $15 and extends fabric life by 1-2 years.
